Colt Model of 1911 U.S. Army .45 ACP - Serial Number 4 (ca. 1912)

Model of 1911 U.S. Army serial number 1024 (circa. 1912)  Pistol features first style large UNITED STATES PROPERTY roll mark, early high polish finish and fire blued small parts.   This pistol was one of the first 50 shipped January 4, 1912 in the first shipment to Springfield Armory.

On the earliest examples, the serial number was located on the forward right side of the frame.

Left side.  This example bears the ordnance mark W.G.P., for Major Walter G. Penfield, in the form of a monogram stamped on the left side of the frame above the magazine release.  The earliest variation of this marking is rotated 45 degrees to the right when compared to the same marking on later pistols.  Penfield inspected these pistols from January 2, 1911 - September 30, 1914.  Serial numbers of Model 1911 pistols inspected range from 1 - 101500.

Approximately the first 100 Model of 1911 U.S. Army pistols were marked with the large UNITED STATES PROPERTY roll mark on the left forward flat of the frame.

 

Left side close-up.  Colt logo in a circle on the left side of the slide behind serrations until January 1913, approximately serial number 20000.
